What do I write about? People. Our unexpected power, magical ways in and out, indelible agency and dignity… these are my favourite themes in poems. Seeing those around me as simultaneously oppressed and free, and owning up to my power in that tension, is usually where this leads.
Most of my poems are stories about people. My characters confuse those who expect 1st person confessional focus, and either victims or heroes in poems. I’m still searching for a humanist press which knows we’re all some of both.
People who think this way — activists, artists and allies — are everywhere already, in the mainstream and marginalized. We struggle, and we see each other, and sometimes we speak. That’s why I write poetry — the future I’m writing towards — all along and whatever’s next.
